How to Turn Plastic Bottles Into Pellets

Time:2025-04-30

Introduction

Recycling plastic bottles into reusable pellets can not only effectively reduce the environmental burden caused by landfilling and incineration, but also inject strong impetus into the development of the circular economy through the recycling of resources, and it is an important measure to achieve sustainable development.

Plastic Type Common Applications Characteristics
PET Beverage bottles, cooking oil bottles, food packaging, polyester clothing Transparent, lightweight, heat-sensitive
HDPE Milk jugs, shampoo bottles, detergent containers, pipes Semi-transparent, impact-resistant, chemical-resistant
PVC Water pipes, window frames, wire insulation, medical supplies Rigid/flexible, contains chlorine, difficult to recycle
LDPE Plastic wrap, shopping bags, bubble wrap Flexible, tough, easily deformed
PP Microwave-safe containers, yogurt cups, straws, auto parts Heat-resistant, lightweight, food-grade

Process

1. Collection and Sorting Collect discarded  bottles and remove components (caps, labels, etc.) manually or via a trommel screen.
2. Cleaning and Crushing Wash bottles with alkaline solutions to remove contaminants, then shred them into 10-15 mm flakes using a crusher.

PET Processing Flow:
High-temperature alkali washing (80-90°C) → Friction cleaning → Rinsing
*(PET hot washing requires maintaining 2-3% sodium hydroxide concentration for over 30 minutes)

HDPE/PP Processing:
Room temperature washing → Drying → Melt extrusion

3. Drying Dry the flakes in a hot-air dryer (80-100°C) to reduce moisture content below 0.02%.
4. Melting and Extrusion Feed dried flakes into a twin-screw extruder. Melt at 260-280°C, filter impurities via mesh screens, and degas to remove volatile compounds.
5. Pelletizing Extrude the molten plastic through a die, then cut into uniform pellets using a water-ring or underwater pelletizing system.
6. Post-Processing Dry pellets, screen out defective ones, and package for storage or sale.

Applications of Plastic Bottle Pellets

Recycled plastic bottle pellets are widely used in:

Textiles: Spun into polyester fibers for clothing and carpets.

Packaging: Reprocessed into food-grade containers after SSP treatment.

Construction: Mixed with additives to make insulation materials or plastic lumber.

Conclusion

Turning plastic bottles into pellets (plastic bottle pellets) is a sustainable practice that transforms waste into valuable resources. With proper technology and equipment, this process supports global environmental goals while creating economic opportunities.
