The pelletizer die head is a valuable, high-precision core component of the pelletizing line, demanding significant maintenance and careful handling. To prevent downtime caused by die head failure, strict operational procedures and protective measures must be implemented to ensure its constant availability. Negligence or mishandling during maintenance, cleaning, or adjustment is the primary cause of damage to various pelletizer die head types, necessitating rigorous training for all personnel involved.
Operators must thoroughly understand the function of the pelletizer die head, grasp the impact of temperature changes, die hole adjustments, or adjustment bar settings on product quality, and identify potential failure sources. They must also recognize the critical importance of maintaining optimal contact between the heater and the die head, and be capable of diagnosing faults within the line and pinpointing their location.

Key Operational Guidelines:
1.Avoid Frequent Adjustments: When extrusion exhibits pulsations, constant adjustment of the gap die head block should be avoided (as the equipment is generally not designed for this).
2.Monitor Inlet Pressure: Operators must be able to determine if the inlet pressure exceeds its limits based on pressure measurements.
3.Adjust Mouth Dies/Flow Blocks Carefully: Adjustments to the mouth die or flow block must be performed slowly and gently, varying only moderately within adjacent areas to prevent damage to bolts and the flow block itself.
4.Use Soft Tools Exclusively: Only scrapers made of soft materials (copper, brass, soft aluminum) can be used to remove melt from inside the mouth die to avoid scratching. Similarly, measuring the mouth die gap width requires soft gauges, such as those made of brass. Even the slightest scratch can cause streaks on the extrudate and severely degrade product quality.
Die Head Changeover & Maintenance:
Dedicated Personnel: Frequent changeover of various pelletizer die heads – common in applications like film and sheet extrusion – must be assigned to dedicated personnel, preferably individuals experienced in disassembly, inspection, and installation.
Designated Area: Disassembly, cleaning, repair, and maintenance of the pelletizer die head should occur in a designated area away from production. This area must be clean, well-padded (e.g., with corrugated cardboard), and equipped appropriately.
Safe Handling: Manual lifting using pulley set chains is strictly prohibited due to the high risk of damaging the die head. Consider using twine/rope slings instead, which significantly reduces changeover time and eliminates this hazard.
Heater Inspection:
The pre-heater must be equipped with an adequate number of heating elements and a suitable control system.
Individual control for each pelletizer die head heater is not always mandatory, but depends on the size of the specific die head.
Thorough Cleaning Procedure:
For thorough cleaning, loosen the die head’s main bolts but do not remove them completely; the die head remains attached to the pelletizer. Only bolts associated with the runners need to be loosened.
